Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Devon Bostick (Jasper) from The CW hit show, The 100. We talked about Jasper’s love life, Comic Con, what we can expect in Season 2, and more!
Devon wasn’t always the sweet, innocent and sometimes dangerously courageous boy we know him as through his character on The 100. If you were anything like me as a teenager, you were obsessed with Degrassi: The Next Generation. Due to this love, I remember first being introduced to Devon as one Nina Dobrev’s (Mia) ex-boyfriends from Lakehurst. And if you were a fan, you were remember the slap hear ‘round the world.(Skip to 0:36 for the full effect!)
“I love Nina. She’s the greatest and being slapped by her was an honor,” Devon says with a laugh.
Considering he’s from Toronto, Devon grew up watching Degrassi and aimed to be on the show when he grew up. But, post-Degrassi, Devon continued to live out many other dreams.
His filmography has a long list of titles that includes Saw IV, Adoration, and of course Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
While filming for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Devon got to film in British Colombia and fell in love with it. “It’s one of my favorite places in Canada,” he says. Once he found out that his new series, The 100, was shooting there, he was excited to return and realized that everything was falling into place!
This will be Devon’s second season on The 100. But, it wasn’t always supposed to be that way.
When auditioning, he went in for the role of Monty. “I auditioned for Monty. It was the end of the season for auditioning and I was kind of broken down, so I sort of went in there and had some fun and played around,” he explains. He goes on to tell the story of how he didn’t get a call back, but was then offered the role of Jasper, who was supposed to only be a guest star, not a series regular. “I read the script and saw that Jasper died and I thought it was awesome that they killed off this loving character,” he said.
So, how did Devon’s character turn into a series regular? Because of the fans! That devotion does not go unnoticed. “It was a beautiful thing to know that the work was so appreciated, because that was my goal. My goal was never to come back to life and live through the series. My goal was to make it that when I do die, it’s going to suck so much that hearts will be broken. This loving character is dead and I wanted to set the precedent for the series. I wanted to set the precedent that no one is safe,” he says.
Even though Jasper may have not died in the pilot episode, his attack not only set a precedent for the other members of The 100, but it also raised some interesting questions. When asked if Jasper will confront his attackers in Season 2, Devon says, “I know that Jasper is going to deal with his issues in his own way.”
But, the main question surrounding Jasper’s attack has always been why? “What I find interesting are the theories on why they threw that spear. That’s what I really love, the idea that they weren’t supposed to go into Mount Weather or who was throwing that spear and why did they throw it? Maybe they were protecting us, maybe they weren’t,” he says. He adds that the grounders “could have killed me if they wanted to” and that “a spear through the heart is a pretty clear warning.” Hopefully we’ll find out the answer in Season 2!
Speaking of, the cast and crew are back on set and hard at work to bring you more amazing twists and turns for Season 2! When talking about the atmosphere on set, Devon answered with, “It’s great, I love it. It’s funny because I feel like I never left in some way because I still hang out with most of the cast off set. When we were back in LA, I was golfing with Bob (Bellamy) every day, cooking with Eliza (Clarke), and going to Six Flags with Lindsay (Raven), Eliza and Chris (Monty). “ Looks like all of that on screen chemistry between friends isn’t just acting!
The cast will be able to spend even more time together with San Diego Comic Con 2014 approaching at the end of this week! At the time of our interview, Devon didn’t know if he was going to Comic Con due to the scheduling of shooting. However, this tweet solved the mystery of whether or not he’ll be attending:
AHHH GOING TO #COMICON!!!! Very excited! Checkout our panel for #the100 because it’s cool. It’s cool! http://t.co/QWt68qXHvv

When speaking about the experience of going to Comic Con last year (he was there for a Canadian film he did), Devon said, “Last year, I was still a guest star when they went to Comic Con. We shot the pilot and they knew that I would probably be coming on as a series regular after they tested it. They wanted to keep the idea that Jasper was dead.” Hm, wonder if this means that Bob (Bellamy) and Thomas (Finn) won’t be present this year since we don’t know what happened to them in the Season 1 finale yet? Let the speculation begin!
When talking with Devon, I also got some answers to the other burning questions swirling around the upcoming season! “I was surprised but also happy that the writers brought the story kind of full circle to the idea of Mount Weather, which was our first goal in the place, but we got sidetracked by the entire war and bloodshed with the grounders,” he says about his reaction to finding out the new direction of the show.
So, what else can we expect to see happen to our beloved characters of The 100 in Season 2? First up, major casting news! When discussing Jasper’s love life, he revealed that we’ll be introduced to a new potential love interest for Jasper in the Season 2 premiere. “I had my eyes on Octavia for quite a while, but sometimes you just got to move on. Jasper might have a bit of a love interest this season, and she’ll be there in the first episode. There’s going to be a girl that suits Jasper’s fancy,” he says. How exciting! We can’t wait to meet her!
But, as well all know with this show, expect the unexpected. “I have a feeling it’s going to start off with the fans thinking that they know what’s going on and soon after, finding out that they don’t,” he says with a laugh. Stop teasing us, Devon!
He does, however, reveal that with the adults landing on the ground there will be a “great dynamic between the adults and kids.” We may also be seeing some familiar faces. “I don’t think we’ll ever see the last of Murphy,” he says. Lastly, Devon also reveals that will we find out the mystery behind that mountain, referring to Mount Weather, of course. Can October come any faster?!
The 100 Season 2 premieres Wednesday, October 22nd at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW!
